Fact Sheet

Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

  • Make-A-Wish is one of the world's leading children's charities and has granted the wishes of more than 415,000 children with critical illnesses worldwide since 1980.
  • Make-A-Wish Missouri & Kansas serves all counties in Missouri and Kansas. Since 1983, we have granted over 8,100 wishes to date, including over 419 this past year.
  • A Make-A-Wish experience is not a "last wish" as many of our Wish Kids go on to recover and live long, full lives.
  • The Make-A-Wish message and mission are life-affirming, hope-giving aspects of the Wish Experience. We never use the words "terminal" or "dying" to refer to a Wish Child, nor do we unduly emphasize a child's illness, medical treatment or death.
  • Typically, children's wishes fall into four categories: To Be (e.g., a zookeeper, a firefighter, a baker), To Meet (e.g., a favorite celebrity or athlete), To Have (e.g., a computer, a playhouse, a puppy), or To Go (e.g., to a theme park, Hawaii, a major sporting event).
  • To qualify for a wish, the child must be order than 2 1/2 years old and younger than 18 (at the time of referral) and must not have received a wish from another wish-granting organization. A child can be referred to Make-A-Wish by a parent or guardian, a medical professional, or by the child.
  • Make-A-Wish is here to restore hope and make it more powerful than ever. More than 300,000 U.S. families have trusted us with a profound mission: to grant a child's fondest wish and replenish hope, strength and joy.
  • More than 33,000 volunteers across the country help Make-A-Wish maintain its grassroots support by delivering the organization's mission to children with critical illness across the country. Volunteers serve Make-A-Wish chapters in a variety of capacities, including wish granting, office administrative support, special events, fundraising, language translation and much more.
  • The Make-A-Wish Foundation was one of the first charities to earn the Better Business Bureaus Wish Giving Alliance Seal and has earned the highest rating, four stars, from Charity Navigator, the nation's premier independent charity elevator. Make-A-Wish Missouri & Kansas also received the BBB Torch Award in 2017.
