Local Fourteen Year Old Named Honorary St. Louis County Police Officer Thanks to Make-A-Wish Missouri

May 27, 2014

St. Louis, MO

Fourteen-year-old Jalisha from St. Louis is battling End Stage Renal Disease.  She loves reading, cooking and when she grows up she wants to “be a cop.”  So it’s no surprise her one true wish is to be a police officer for the day.  On Thursday, May 29, Jalisha’s heartfelt wish will be granted thanks to the St. Louis County Police Department, Mayor Francis Slay, County Executive Charlie Dooley, Maggiano’s Little Italy, St. Louis Rams, St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, NC4, and Don Brown Chevrolet.

Jalisha will think Thursday, May 29 is starting like many others – with a doctor appointment at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.  Much to her surprise, the helicopter on the helipad is her ride for the morning and will take her to the St. Louis County and Municipal Police Academy for her first stop, training.  A full schedule of events is listed below.

You can follow Jalisha’s adventurous wish on Facebook and Twitter at: @MakeAWishMO #OfficerJalisha

Interviews available at: SSM Cardinal Glennon, Police Academy, Busch Stadium and Maggiano’s.

Approximately 9:00 AM  - SSM Cardinal Glennon (1465 S Grand Blvd, St Louis, MO 63104) Media please arrive by 8:55 AM

Chief Belmar of the St. Louis County Police Department will meet Jalisha in the atrium of SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center to reveal that she does not have a doctor appointment and that she is getting her wish granted of being a police officer for the day.

Approximately 10:30 AM – Police Academy (1266 Sutter Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63133)

Jalisha will experience life at the Academy.  She will also be presented with a police uniform and official badge.  Additionally Jalisha will:

  • Participate with the Defensive Tactics exam first upon arriving at 10:30.
  • Afterwards she will participate in the handcuffing tutorial at approx. 11:00.
  • Interaction with Tactical Team members at 11:30
  • Lunch with recruits from 12:00-12:30
  • Interaction with K9 Unit from 12:30-1:15
  • If time permits, Jalisha will experience the CMPA simulation room where she will be able to shoot simulated firearms (not live weapons!).  The simulation room is essentially a large screen interactive video game.

Jalisha will then receive a call from Mayor Slay’s office that help is needed downtown: all three St. Louis sports mascots – Rampage, Louie and Fredbird – are being held hostage somewhere in St. Louis.

Approximately 1:45 PM -  Edward Jones Dome (901 N Broadway, St Louis, MO 63101)

Jalisha will search for tips and interview witnesses who will ultimately direct her to the Scottrade Center.

Approximately 2:30 PM – Scottrade Center (1401 Clark Ave, St Louis, MO 63103)

While continuing to search for clues and interview witnesses, Jalisha receives information leading her to Jim Hayes at FoxSports Midwest at Ballpark Village.

Approximately 3:15 PM – Ballpark Village (601 Clark Ave, St Louis, MO 63102)

Once in Ballpark Village, Jalisha visits Jim Hayes in the FoxSports Midwest booth to ask for his assistance in getting the word out to the public that the mascots have been captured.  As they are leaving the broadcast booth, they receive an anonymous tip that leads them to Busch Stadium.

Approximately 3:45-4:45 PM – Busch Stadium (700 Clark Ave, St Louis, MO 63102) Interviews available at 4:30PM

Jalisha finds the mascots being held by the Rally Squirrel. Jalisha apprehends the suspect, Rally Squirrel, and removes his costume revealing a prominent St. Louisian as the  perpetrator! How could someone so renowned in the St. Louis sports scene think he could get away with this

Approximately 6 PM – Maggiano’s Little Italy (2 The Blvd, Richmond Heights, MO 63117)

Maggiano’s will host a celebration in honor of Jalisha’s work.  She will be joined by the St. Louis County Chief of Police, Jon Belmar and County Executive Charlie Dooley who will present her with a token of appreciation.

Interviews available at: SSM Cardinal Glennon (Media please arrive 8:55AM), Police Academy, Busch Stadium and Maggiano’s.
