Taylor Explores Pearl Harbor During his Trip to Hawaii

“ This trip will be a life changing experience for me. ”

Wish kid, Taylor, affectionately known as Tay, age 17, was extremely excited about his upcoming trip to Hawaii in June. “I can’t wait to go to Hawaii with all my family to see Pearl Harbor and have great food – this trip will be a life changing experience for me” says Tay.

Tay’s story is one of joyful optimism.  You see Tay was born with an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system called Cystic Fibrosis (CF).  CF is caused by a defective gene and its protein product that produces unusually thick, sticky mucus that: clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.

Tay is a vivacious and engaging young man.  Optimism is more than an outlook; it’s a way of life.  Balancing a daily regimen of medications and medical treatments with a teenage lifestyle can have its obstacles.  For Tay keeping healthy and managing his wellness is priority.  Regular exercise and spending hours wearing a mechanical vest that vibrates his chest walls to break up mucus, alongside inhaled nebulized medications and taking dozens of pills throughout a typical day to aid digestion and ward off respiration infection is routine.  At age 7 he told his Mom (Lori) “Don’t worry Mother God only gives you what you can handle”.  Despite the challenges CF presents Tay is a remarkable young man with insight and courage rarely found in one so young.

Tay loves sports especially basketball, has loads of friends, loves his car and is interested in learning much more about girls.  He talks about the future like most teenage boys approaching their senior year in high school.  He’s excited about landing his first job and busy planning for and visiting colleges – all with enormous hopes, aspirations and expectations to contribute to the world  well beyond any thirty-seven years.

Tay is graciously thankful and excited for his wish through Make-A-Wish® Missouri, and we are blessed to be a part of his life.
